Methodology
It is important to create a learning environment that both champions the individuality of each student and ultimately fosters independence in studying music. With a focus on learning via lesson and theory methods, varied musical supplements, and fun songs and activities with development purposes, the studio at Joe Kenney Piano focuses on a comprehensive learning plan.
Music Theory
An integral part of developing independent musicians is imparting understanding of the compositional process. Joe's vast experience allows him to challenge students and help them excel in understanding theory that can then be applied to other pieces. Through playing, and more importantly, understanding, scales, chords, and several other musical machinations, students become prepared to approach the piano with confidence.
Sight Reading
As students become familiar with music theory, they can concurrently engage confidently in learning music on their own. Sight-reading of new music is fun in the short term and significant in the long-term, especially in the areas of reading, musicality, and pianism.
Ear Training
A vital part of being a well-rounded pianist is ear training. In the studio at Joe Kenney Piano, an important component of lessons is learning to understand the music from the perspective of hearing and discerning intervals, chord progressions, and various musical patterns.
Performance Opportunities
The studio at Joe Kenney PIano offers regular performance opportunities. While these perforamnces are not required, they are strongly enouraged. These events include low-key, fun retirement home concerts, and an annual recital. The intention with the performances is to celebrate the students and the music they have learned and worked so hard on, through sharing that music with friends and family and others in a warm and supportive environment.
